Rabbi Matya ben Charash- the segulah of 18 candles
The 'segulah of 18 candles' of Rabbi Matya ben Charash has taken the Jewish world by storm. I haven't found this segulah in any authoritative books on the subject, but lately it's become very popular, and many stories attest to its effectiveness. Moreover, the segulah itself- saying chapters of Tehillim, and lighting candles in the honor of the Tanna Rabbi Matya ben Charash- what could be wrong with it? Try it and see!

Its segulah
The Midrash (Yalkut Shimoni, Torah 161) relates:
It once happened that Rabbi Matya ben Charash was sitting in the study hall involved in Torah study, and his face's radiance was like the sun, and its expression was like that of the ministering angels- for all his life he had never looked at a woman. Once the Satan passed by and was jealous of him, saying, "Is it possible that a man like this has never sinned?" He said before HaKadosh Baruch Hu, "Master of the world, Rabbi Matya ben Charash- what do You consider him to be?" He replied, "He is a complete tzaddik." He [the Satan] said to Him, "Give me permission and I will test him." He said to him, "You will not be able to defeat him." "Nevertheless,"[said the Satan.] He said to him, "Go."
He appeared to [Rabbi Matya] as a beautiful woman, the likes of whom had never been seen since the days of Na'amah, the sister of Tuval Kayin, who misled the ministering angels. He stood before him; when [Rabbi Matya] sensed him, he turned his face around to face backwards. Again [the Satan] came and stood at his left side; he turned his face to the right side. He appeared to him from all sides. [Rabbi Matya] said, "I am afraid lest my yetzer hara will overcome me and cause me to sin." What did that tzaddik do? He called his student, the one who always served him, and said to him, "Go bring me fire and a nail." He brought him nails, and [Rabbi Matya] put them into his eyes.
When the Satan saw this, he was shocked, and desisted. At that time, HaKadosh Baruch Hu called to Rafael, and told him, "Go heal Rabbi Matya ben Charash." He came and stood before him. He said to him, "Who are you?" He said to him, "I am Rafael, whom HaKadosh Baruch Hu has sent to heal your eyes." He said to him, "Let me be. Whatever has happened, has happened." He returned to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and said to Him, "Master of the world, Matya said such-and-such to me." He told him, "Go and tell him that I guarantee that the yetzer hara will not rule over him." Immediately he healed him.
We thus learn that he excelled in the area of guarding the purity of one's eyes, shemirat ainayim, to such a degree that he never looked at a woman. This being so, visiting his burial site is known as a segulah for guarding one's eyes, and also for healing one's eyes.
The segulah of 18 candles
The segulah:
Prepare 18 candles, and light one after the other in the following manner:
Light the first one and say, "This candle is in honor of Rabbi Matya ben Charash, that the tefillot- prayers -should be accepted."
Read chapter 86 in Tehillim.
Light the 2nd candle, and say again, "This candle is in honor of Rabbi Matya ben Charash, that the tefillot should be accepted."
Again read chapter 86 in Tehillim.
Do this 18 times: Lighting a candle, mentioning the tzaddik, and saying chapter 86 in Tehillim.
Where are the candles lit- in the home, or at the tzaddik's burial site?
Answer: The candles are lit at home.
For each request is one candle lit, or 18?
Answer: A total of 18 candles.
Does the segulah need to be done on the same day the salvation is needed or is it possible to do it at any time?
Answer: The segulah can be done at any time! But also have intention for the time the salvation is needed.
Does the segulah need to be done a number of times or is once enough?
Answer: The segulah can be done once or a number of times- however much you want. Each time you should have intention for your goal.
